3MI LIVE: Sabres vs. Flames

Welcome to the Corey Tropp era of Sabres hockey.

The former Michigan State Spartan makes his NHL debut tonight as the Buffalo Sabres (6-5-0) host the Calgary Flames (5-5-1).

Tropp was recalled yesterday to fill the void left by Patrick Kaleta, who was suspended for four games for an incident in Wednesday’s loss to Philadelphia. The rookie will wear #78.

That Wednesday game left questions for many as to who should be in net for Buffalo tonight, with Ryan Miller getting chased in the opening minutes. According to Lindy Ruff, they decided to stick to their “schedule” and Jhonas Enroth will make his third start of the season tonight.

Enroth’s numbers are sparkling, sporting a 2-0-0 record with a 1.39 goals against and .955 save percentage.

It will be an all-Swedes matchup in net, as Calgary will send out Henrik Karlsson (3 GP, 0-1-1, 3.32 GAA, .881 sv%). The Flames are coming off a win last night in Detroit, defeating the Red Wings by a score of 4-1.

In other lineup news, Mike Weber is expected to return to the press box in favor of Marc-Andre Gragnani.

Keep checking back for updates, we’ll be live updating as soon as warmups start.

Game time.

15:13 1st // Sabres came out skating well, making smart decisions. Shots are one each.

12:01 1st // Drew Stafford scores his fourth of the year to open the scoring. Andrej Sekera brings the puck up ice, gives a nice little pass to Derek Roy as he enters the zone, and Roy finds a wide open Stafford at the top of the circle. One-timer beats Karlsson over the glove. Great goal.

10:18 1st // Former Sabre Cory Sarich takes a penalty, putting Buffalo on the powerplay.

8:12 1st // Sabres’ first man advantage chance does not bear any fruit but some good scoring opportunities. Karlsson stopped Drew Stafford on a goal-mouth redirection.

3:56 1st // Great start by Enroth tonight. Just made a couple brilliant point blank saves. He’s not doing any favors for the people sick of goaltender controversy talk.

End of 1st period: Sabres 1, Flames 0. Shots 18-8 in favor of Buffalo. Henrik Karlsson is standing on his face. Made some unbelievable saves. No way this should be a one-goal game. Sabres offense is all over the Flames.

20:00 2nd // The fire alarm in First Niagara Center continues to go off. Lights flashing constantly. If there is a sudden lack of tweets it’ll be due to the seizure.

15:55 2nd // Sabres still throwing shots on Karlsson. Nothing doing. Enroth making some huge saves as well. Great game going here.

10:51 2nd // Stafford and Sekera take penalties less than a minute apart. Sabres kill the first penalty thanks to some big saves from Enroth. Allow only one chance after Stafford gets out. Big penalty kill for the best unit in the league.

2:17 2nd // Sabres take a too many men penalty. Loose line change where the puck happened to be in the area.

End of 2nd period: Sabres 1, Flames 0. Buffalo outshot Calgary 19-9 to push the totals to 37-17 for Buffalo.

Incredible performance from both goalies right now.

19:21 3rd // This may be Ville Leino’s best game as a Sabre. Maybe.

18:15 3rd // A fortunate pass deflects right into Nathan Gerbe’s wheelhouse and he buries one past Karlsson. Sabres up 2-0. Marc-Andre Gragnani gets the assist.

14:15 3rd // Calgary finally gets one past Enroth, as Alex Tanguay deflects a shot in the slot off the post and in. Score now 2-1.

10:56 3rd // Jason Pominville appears to score but the play is ruled dead. FNC crowd not pleased with the call.

4:25 3rd // The game seems to have tightened up a bit. Calgary’s doing a good job getting pressure in the Buffalo end. One bounce can change everything.

18.0 3rd // An offsides call brings a stoppage with the Flames skating with the extra attacker. Calgary timeout.

0.0 3rd // Pominville hits the empty net as time expires. They’ll look at it. It may or may not count. Doesn’t matter. Sabres win.

Final score: Sabres 2? 3?, Flames 1. Shots end 45-30.

Three stars are Drew Stafford, Henrik Karlsson, Brad Boyes.
