Buffalo Sabres turn 40. Sabretooth seen buying Ferrari.

December 2nd isn’t exactly a memorable day for Sabres fans. That is, unless you were in Minnesota on this day in 1972 when Rene Robert and Gerry Meehan each had hat tricks in an 8-6 loss to the North Stars. But it should be.

On this day in 1969, the National Hockey League granted an expansion franchise to Seymour and Northrup Knox to begin play in the 1970-71 season. They would later be named “Sabres” in a fan contest. They’ve been breaking hearts ever since.

In the coming year, celebrations will be popping up. Who knows what the franchise will do to celebrate. Rumor says new jerseys, but nothing has been announced yet.

Here at 3MI, we’re gonna start doing some “Sabres @ 40” countdowns and features, so keep an eye out.

  1. Rumors? The Larry has stated in no less than two (Schopp and the Bulldog and Leafs Lunch) interviews that they’re going with the current third jersey as the home jersey, with a new complimentary white jersey and an all-new third jersey. Rumors be damned.
